about Liege
Founded in the 7th century, Liege became an important intellectual centre during the medieval times and attracted many noted scholars. However, later on it developed as one of the country's major manufacturing centres. Present day Liege combines modern-day industry and facilities with beautiful old buildings that testify to its glorious past. The city lies in the east part of the country near the Meuse Valley's coalfields. Much of its industry is concentrated in steel production. The city's rich past is to be observed in its elegant historic attractions such as the Palace of the Prince Bishops, St. Bartolomew's Church and the gothic cathedral of St. Paul.
