about Plovdiv
Although Plovdiv plays a secondary role to Sofia, the city is a commendable rival to the Bulgarian capital. Set upon three scenic hills, which rise above the Thracian plain, Plovdiv lures visitors with a wealth of culture, history and attractions. The restored ruins of the city's Roman amphitheatre accommodate at concerts and events up to 3000 people. The local cityscape features examples of Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman architecture. The old part of the city resembles a vast open-air museum, with charming cobbled streets and plenty of fine restaurants. The city is a gateway to Bulgaria's famous Valley of the Roses.
