about Grenoble
Grenoble
The administrative capital of the department of Isere, Grenoble is a city in southeastern France. It's beautifully located at the foot of the Alps, right where Drac joins the Isere River.
What you shouldn't miss during your sightseeing adventure in Grenoble is the fortification complex, La Bastille.
Built on the mountainside and overlooking the city, the forts are considered the greatest landmarks of Grenoble and its most visited attraction. The Bastille was begun in the Middle Ages and later supplied with a semi-underground defense network. It's rightfully credited as the most extensive example of 19th-Century fortifications in the country. In addition to its construction, we should mention the importance of its strategic location on the Alpine frontier.
Since 1934, tourists and locals have taken advantage of the system of egg-shaped cable cars that run to the Bastille, providing an excellent view of the city and the surrounding area.
Another attraction worth being seen is the Musee de la Resistance et de la Deportation de L'Isere. Built right in the city center, this Renaissance museum takes its visitors back to World War II ,displaying remnants of the great history of the region as well as personal testimonies. Although created in 1966, the museum was expanded throughout the 70s and 80s.
Together with the interesting sightseeing and excellent Alpine location, Grenoble offers a myriad of hotspots for modern tourists. They should definitely taste the popular French cuisine served in the region, and in addition to that they can head for a number of nightlife venues.
