about Heidelberg
Heidelbergers consider their hometown the cradle of European civilisation. This is due to a human species' jawbone that was discovered in 1907 close by and estimated to be 600 thousand years old. Heidelberg is above all a university centre and a historic attraction. The city's university was established in 1396 and is one of the oldest in the country. Heidelberg's history is closely tied to Protestantism. The city witnessed Martin Luther's defence of the 95 theses. Nowadays travellers are drawn, above all, to Heidelberg's charming Old Town, which ruins are the scene for a variety of concerts.
