about Kiel
Kiel
Kiel has an attractive location on the eastern sides of the base of the Jutland peninsula, in the southeast corner of the Baltic Sea in Germany. The city is the capital of the Schleswig-Holstein state, and has been known as the venue for a number of sailing events including Kiel Week, the biggest one in the world.
Sights worth visiting in the town include the Church of St. Nicholas from the 14th-15th Century, the ruins of a castle from the 16th Century, the Transmission Tower and the Sparkassen Arena. We also recommend the Ernst Barlachs sculpture, The Spirit Fighter, and Rathaus, the town hall from 1911.
For your leisure time, there are several seaside resiorts in the vicinity of Kiel. We recommend Kiel-Strande, Kiel-Schilksee, Moltenort and Laboe.
When it comes to its economic development, Kiel is where the HDW Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft GmbH shipyard was founded in 1838. It's famous for building the first German submarine in 1850, while nowadays it has become a subsidiary of Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems.
