about Reykjavik
The capital of Iceland and its most important port, Reykjavik has a population of only a hundred thousand people. No wonder, since the chilly country has a total population of 269.000. Situated on the southwest coast of Iceland, the city is enclosed by beautiful mountains. Its name comes from the Icelandic - bay of smokes, due to the steam that goes up from the thermal spas nearby. Reykjavik is an excellent destination for skiing, fishing and hiking. However, it provides a number of cultural venues as well. It houses two theatre companies, a university, a symphonic orchestra and a number of museums and galleries. Dubbed by the locals the cleanest city in the world, Reykjavik might come out to be the most expensive one too.
