about Cork
Contrary to what most people think, Cork's name was not derived from the brewing industry, which by the way thrives in the city. The city's name originates from the Gaelic "corcaigh", which means marsh. Cork is a city almost entirely built on water. Its city centre lies on a River Lee island. The city boasts more than 1000 years of history, during which Cork was invaded by both the Vikings and the Normans. At present Cork is the second largest city in Ireland and the site of the prestigious University College. The city hosts an international Jazz festival, which attracts thousands of people from around the globe.
