about Trieste
Situated in the northeast of Italy, Trieste had a turbulent history. It was an important Adriatic Port of the Habsburg Empire in the past and testimony of that can still be seen in the city's prevailing Austrian style architecture. Until 1954, the city belonged to the former Yugoslavia and therefore Slavic language is still common. Nowadays the city is a shipping trade and metallurgy centre. Dominated by the San Guisto Hill, Trieste is home to interesting Roman Forum Ruins, Castle and a Cathedral. Beautiful nature and amazing karsts caves surround the city. During the years, the city has won the likes of great literary figures such as James Joyce and Rainer Maria Rilke, who resided and worked here.
