Cagliari lies on the south coast of Sardinia in the so-called Gulf of Angles. It is the island's main city and port. The Phoenicians established the city in the 9th century B. C. and called it Karalis - which translates as "a rocky place". Cagliari had turbulent history. Because of its strategic location, the city was a coveted spot by all major powers.
