This small hilly town is situated in Umbria, central Italy and is home to roughly 25000 people. Assisi is a lovely historic town, best known as the birthplace of St. Francis who forsook wealth and dedicated himself to life of poverty and service of God. Undoubtedly, a great religious figure, St. Francis was the person who established the Franciscan order. Today, thousands of pilgrims visit this sacred place annually. Assisi is dominated by the Rocca - a large fortress in the heart of the city. Many churches, basilicas and chapels are also worth checking while in the town.
