about Coimbra
Coimbra is most famous for its ancient university. Originally found in Lisbon in the 13th century, the university was moved to Coimbra in 1537. Thanks to its large student community, the city is vibrant and offers a number of fine dining, shopping and entertainment venues. Coimbra is dominated by Mondego River, which is popularly known as the River of Poets. Furthermore, the city fascinates the visitor with its ancient buildings, the Baroque style Library and the University Baroque Clock Tower. Come in May when the academic year is over and you will be able to hear the famous Coimbra fado, which features passionate lyrics, accompanied by authentic 12-string Coimbra guitar.
