SetÃºbal Being part of the Lisbon metropolitan area, Setubal is just 40 km south of Portugal's capital. The city is set on the northern bank of the Sado River estuary, and includes 8 parishes of the subregion of Peninsula de Setubal. It's on the 15th of September when the municipality has its holiday, as this was the date in 1860 when King Pedro V of Portugal recognized Setubal as a city. At the beginning of the 20th Century, Setubal was one of the most important fishing industry centers in Portugal. In spite of the fact that none of these are operating today, the city has developed its tourism industry and attracts thousands of visitors charmed by its beaches and lovely nature. You'll enjoy Arrabida Natural Park, the beauty of its unspoilt nature and excellent coast. There's also a colony of dolphins in the Sado River that gives a different atmosphere to the place. Those who love sightseeing shouldn't miss the Monastery of Jesus in Setubal. It isn't just the main historical landmark, but also a fine example of the late Gothic style in 15th-16th Century Portugal. The church is built in a style called Manueline, and is well-preserved even though it's one of the oldest buildings of the Gothic era. Other historical monuments include the Sao Juliao Church with its Manueline portals and Castelo de Sao Felipe from the 16th-17th Century.
