about Almeria
Almería
If you're eager to spend your holidays in a quality Mediterranean resort, head for Almeria, Spain. The city is not just the capital of the Almeria province, but also an important tourist and cultural hub. Almeria is located in southeastern Spain and the birthplace for a number of famous Spaniards: Nicolas Salmeron (the 3rd president), Manolo Escobar, Jose Tomas and David Bisbal.
Almeria is a place with its own atmosphere and although it is part of the Autonomous Community of Andalucia in Southern Spain, it has a number of customs, accents and history that differ from the rest of the region. Tourists heading for Almeria will use the Almeria International Airport and enjoy the largest naturist beach in Europe. The economy of the city is based mainly on agriculture, and a great deal of the production is exported to the rest of Europe.
While visiting Almeria, be sure to find out about the Crystal Cave, which was discovered in 2000. It's filled with giant gypsum crystals and measures 1.8 x 1.7 meters. Geologists believe it was formed during the Messinian salinity crisis some 6 million years ago, when the Mediterranean Sea evaporated and left layers of salt sediments behind. Unfortunately, it isn't yet open to tourist visits.
