about Gijon
Gijón
Situated in the autonomous community of Asturias in Spain, Gijon is a municipality that was mentioned in early Medieval texts as Gigia. It has a rich past and vivid cultural life that appeal to tourists visiting the area.
It was in the early 19th Century when Gijon was best known for its Real Instituto Asturiano, the college founded by Jovellanos. Nowadays, it offers plenty of museums that are worth visiting. We highly recommend the Museum of the Bagpipe, Revillagigedo Palace and Museum, Evaristo Valle Museum, Nicanor Piñole Museum, Museo del Ferrocarril and Juan Barjola Museum.
The city has 13 libraries and a dozen Cultural City Centers where those who enjoy swimming pools and gyms can spend some fine hours.
