about Durham
The county of Durham is set in the northeast of England and is mainly known as the birthplace of Christianity in England. Monks established a shop here at the end of the 10th century and soon gained authority over the region that lasted until 1836. Indication of the Bishops' bounty can be seen in the splendid Durham Cathedral and Castle. Those two are designated a World Heritage Site. Present day Durham is a vivid market town, surrounded by magnificent scenery, including limestone cliffs and charming north coast towns.
