about Plymouth
Plymouth is the biggest city in the southwest of England and the place where the Mayflower ship with the Pilgrim Fathers departed for the new continent in 1620. Visitors can now see the island House, where they spent their last night before heading off to America, together with the Mayflower steps. Present day Plymouth comprises three major parts. The Barbarican is the old area of the city and boasts narrow streets and historic buildings. The modern district is where you will come across many new edifices, most of them built after the war. The Hoe, the city's most charming area, comprises a large park and a harbour promenade. A major tourist site is the Plymouth Gin Distillery, which has been in operation for more than two centuries.
